It is the first wine consumption market of the world. It is also the first Cognac consumption market.
It is a very open market, however, there are differences between States, related to its federal structure, with monopolies in certain areas. It is also very influenced by the three tier system that establishes three separate levels – the importer, the wholesaler and the retailer – for the distribution of wines and spirits in each State.
The 2011 terrorist attacks also lead to prior registration measures for companies that want to sell food products in the USA, which also apply to wines and spirits.
